Minister Michael Mahendere is a multi-award winning Zimbabwean gospel artist, songwriter and producer. From the Mahendere Brothers at age eleven to the global stage with Direct Worship, his music has carried one unmistakable sound — Shona poetry threaded through cinematic worship.
Michael Mahendere is a multi-award winning gospel artist, songwriter and producer from Zimbabwe. He began writing songs at seven, recorded his first record at eleven, and has spent every year since refining a sound that is unmistakably his own.
His writing pulls from the Shona hymnody he grew up with and the orchestral cinema he listens to today. His band, Direct Worship, has anchored a catalogue of celebrated records — the Getting Personal With God series, Classical Worship, and singles like Mumoyo, Salt of the Earth, Chiiko, Zvaringana and Messiah.
Today he tours four continents, mentors a new generation of African creatives, and continues to write the songs his country has been singing for thirty years.
“When Michael leads, the room exhales. There is a depth to his songwriting that words can’t capture.”
